5 Ways to Use Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon sticks are a surprisingly versatile spice rack staple that can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. Whole cinnamon is far more potent than ground cinnamon and sticks can be reused in many cases. Whether used whole or ground into your own spice mix, cinnamon sticks bring a sweet, spicy flavour to hot drinks, desserts, breakfasts and even curries. In this guide, we take a look at some of the best ways to use whole cinnamon.

Best Ways to Use Cinnamon Sticks

If you’re looking for ideas to spice up your favourite foods and drink, here are some of the ways that you could use cinnamon sticks...

1. Flavoured oats

This works best with oats cooked on the stove. Add a stick or two of cinnamon to the pot and allow the spice to absorb into the oats as it cooks. Once the oats are ready, remove the sticks and add butter, milk and sugar for a rich, delicious breakfast.

2. Chai tea

Chai tea is traditionally made with whole spices - cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom and nutmeg. You can also add ground allspice for added flavour. Add these spices to Rooibos or Ceylon tea and cook on the stove.

3. Spicy coffee

Cinnamon works very well in coffee, too. Add whole sticks to a pot of freshly made coffee or add a stick to a ready-made cup of coffee. You could also grind whole cinnamon and add the ground spice to coffee when making filter coffee.

4. Hearty curry

Add cinnamon along with other whole spices to vegetable or meaty curries and let the spice infuse into meat and vegetables. You could try making a spicy stock to add to curries, using whole spices and vegetable or chicken stock.

5. Delicious desserts

Cinnamon adds depth to just about any type of dessert. Add to chocolate mousse and chocolate sauce, ice cream, baked desserts, fridge desserts, puddings and just about any other sweet dish you are making for a subtle kick that enhances your favourite treat.
